The homily delivered by Pope Leo XIV during the Pentecost Mass in St. Peter’s Square on June 8 emphasized the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. Quoting Saint Augustine, the Pope highlighted that "the day has dawned upon us when..., glorified by his ascension into heaven following his resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ sent the Holy Spirit." He likened this event to a renewal of what occurred in the Upper Room, describing it as a mighty wind and fire that descends upon believers.

Pope Leo XIV reflected on how the Holy Spirit changed the lives of the Apostles, who had been fearful after Jesus' death. The Spirit provided them with courage and strength to proclaim God's works. The Pope noted that at Pentecost, people from diverse backgrounds understood each other because "each one heard them speaking in his own native tongue."

Quoting Benedict XVI, he explained: "The Holy Spirit bestows understanding. The Spirit overcomes the 'breach' that began in Babel... In her [the Church], there cannot be those who are neglected or disdained." This notion was further elaborated as Pope Leo XIV spoke about how the Spirit opens borders within hearts and relationships, challenging individualism and promoting love and fraternity.

He expressed concern over modern isolation despite social media connectivity: "Constantly connected, yet incapable of 'networking'. Always immersed in a crowd, yet confused and solitary travellers." According to him, only through abiding in love can individuals remain faithful to God's word.

Pope Leo XIV addressed issues like suspicion and prejudice affecting relationships while lamenting cases marked by domination leading to violence such as femicide. He emphasized that “love, joy, peace” are fruits cultivated by the Holy Spirit for healthy relationships.

On a broader scale, he stated that at Pentecost "the confusion of Babel was finally resolved" by harmony brought by God’s breath uniting hearts across differences without causing division or conflict. The Pope criticized exclusionary mindsets seen in political nationalisms contrasting them with unity taught by Jesus’ commandment of love.

He recalled an observation made by Pope Francis about global discord: “In our world today... We are all ‘connected’, yet find ourselves disconnected from one another.” Invoking prayers for peace amidst wars worldwide became part of his message urging reliance on divine guidance towards unity among humanity under one heavenly Father.
