The recent election of Cardinal Robert F. Prevost as Pope Leo XIV has resonated with many communities, particularly at Villanova University. Brooklyn Ostrowski, a four-year softball player at Villanova, expressed her admiration for Pope Leo's love for sports, stating that it makes him "more relatable on a human level." She noted that his passion for sports shows how leaders can find joy and connection through them. Ostrowski emphasized that sports serve as a unifying force, bringing people together in meaningful ways.

Ava Franz, another student-athlete, admitted she was unfamiliar with Cardinal Prevost before his election but described the announcement as a moment of renewed pride for Villanova students. Siblings Annie and James Welde shared their unique perspective due to their uncle, Father Rob Hagan's involvement with the university and his role within the Augustinian order.

James Welde expressed amazement at having an Augustinian pope and acknowledged his uncle's influence on this significant event. Senior football offensive lineman Dan McManus recounted how he learned about the new pope while moving out of his dorm room. The news prompted excitement when they discovered Pope Leo XIV’s connection to Villanova.

Senior football quarterback Mike Benincasa highlighted how Pope Leo's support for Villanova's athletic teams serves as motivation for athletes. He noted that seeing someone they admire engage in everyday activities like supporting sports teams inspires them.
