Amid recent changes in U.S. immigration policy, Catholic universities are taking steps to support international students affected by the Trump administration's decision to pause student visa processing. Several institutions expressed concern over the impact of these measures on their communities.

The University of Notre Dame emphasized the importance of international students to its campus, stating, "Our international students, scholars and their families are important and vital members of our campus community, and we will continue working to ensure that they are welcomed and supported at Notre Dame."

Santa Clara University also voiced its concerns regarding the halt in visa interviews during a crucial admission period. The university stated it is committed to supporting both new and current international students through this challenging time.

The policy changes include a directive from Secretary of State Marco Rubio for U.S. embassies worldwide to pause new student visa appointments while expanding social media vetting for applicants. Previously scheduled appointments will proceed, but no new applications will be accepted until further notice.

Rubio indicated that the State Department would work with Homeland Security "to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students," especially those linked to critical fields or associated with the Chinese Communist Party.

According to NAFSA: Association of International Educators, over 1.1 million foreign students were in the U.S. during the 2023-2024 academic year, contributing $43.8 billion to the economy.

Fordham University has responded by creating an online resource page for affected individuals, offering information on immigration issues and financial aid. The webpage advises those at risk of immigration actions to contact Fordham's public safety department for assistance and potential legal consultation.

"If necessary, Fordham will provide you with support," including legal consultation if needed, states their webpage. They recommend carrying relevant documents such as passports and visas at all times.

Fordham also outlined protocols for handling law enforcement requests on campus, ensuring officers' credentials are verified before any cooperation occurs unless responding to lawful requests.

As part of a higher education coalition advocating against these policies, Santa Clara University joined others urging a reversal of this stance on foreign student visas. The coalition highlighted America's role in educating global leaders across various fields as a reason for resuming visa interviews promptly.
