No pea soup was wasted in the making of the exorcism-themed horror movie "The Ritual" (XYZ). Directed and co-written by David Midell, the film focuses on more cerebral themes rather than relying heavily on special effects. Despite this approach, it struggles to keep viewers engaged.

Al Pacino takes on the role of a priest for the first time as German-born Capuchin friar Father Theophilus Riesinger. The story follows Father Riesinger's attempt to free Emma Schmidt, played by Abigail Cowen, from demonic possession after psychiatric treatment fails to cure her long-standing mental troubles. St. Joseph’s parish in Earling, Iowa is chosen for the rite, surprising its pastor Father Joseph Steiger, portrayed by Dan Stevens.

The convent at St. Joseph's provides a safe and private environment for Schmidt under the care of nuns led by their mother superior, played by Patricia Heaton. The film explores the tension between Father Riesinger’s faith-based approach and Father Steiger's rationalist doubts.

However, according to John Mulderig from OSV News, "the weak screenplay fails to present the conflict between the two clergymen in a convincing or compelling manner." This results in a movie that is restrained in some respects but overheated in others.

"The Ritual" attempts to address serious themes but lacks impact. It may be suitable for older adolescents due to its respectful handling of potentially exploitative subject matter but ultimately falls short as both a coherent tale and frightfest.

The film contains occasional gory scenes and mature themes such as suicide. It includes brief partial nudity and momentary inappropriate sensuality along with some rough language. The OSV News classification is A-III — adults. It has not been rated by the Motion Picture Association.
