The St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein, Ohio, was destroyed by a massive fire on May 29. Precious Blood Father Ken Schnipke stated that while "the embers have now burned out," the "embers of faith" remain strong since the church's first Mass in 1836.
Father Schnipke addressed the community during a morning Mass at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Chicksaw, Ohio, part of the Marion Catholic Community within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Archbishop Robert G. Casey of Cincinnati attended to support those mourning their loss.
The fire caused significant damage, leading to the collapse of St. John's roof and steeple. No injuries were reported as no one was inside during the incident. The cause is still under investigation.
Father Schnipke described arriving at approximately 2:45 p.m., witnessing "the church roof almost fully engulfed in flames and smoke." He noted signs of hope as efforts begin to salvage what remains and plan for rebuilding.
Nearly 20 fire departments responded to combat the blaze, according to WDTN-TV Channel 2 News. Fire Chief Joe Hartings from Chickasaw Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters arrived after receiving a call about a structure fire at 2:36 p.m., finding "fire running across the whole top of the church."
Shingles were being replaced when a worker noticed smoke and heat from above, Hartings explained.
Archbishop Casey assured his prayers and support for those affected by this event. His message emphasized confidence in the community's enduring faith despite extensive damage.
Father Schnipke quoted St. John 16:20-23 in his homily, reflecting on Jesus' words about mourning and eventual joy. He acknowledged that while challenges lie ahead, he believes nothing is impossible with God’s help.
A Facebook post from Chickasaw Volunteer Fire Department expressed gratitude for assistance received during firefighting efforts and praised community support through provisions of water and food for responders.
