Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Bruce Alan Lewandowski as the new bishop of the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island. The announcement made by the Vatican on April 8 marks a significant milestone for Bishop Lewandowski, who has served as the auxiliary bishop of Baltimore. He expressed his surprise and gratitude during a gathering held at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence.
“I have wanted my whole life to be a poor man serving among the poor and a man who is good news for others,” Bishop Lewandowski stated, when asked about his journey by the Rhode Island Catholic newspaper. Known for his approachable leadership style, Bishop Lewandowski mentioned, “I’m so thrilled to be here... and I never expected to be coming to such a beautiful place. I’m very grateful.”
During his address, delivered partially in Spanish, he emphasized the importance of understanding and listening to the people he will be serving. He appreciated the guidance of retired Providence Bishop Thomas J. Tobin and former Auxiliary Bishop Robert C. Evans, and acknowledged the confidence placed in him by Pope Francis through this appointment.
Bishop Lewandowski's tenure as auxiliary bishop in Baltimore included serving as vicar for Hispanic Catholics and organizing local participation in Pope Francis’ Synod on Synodality. “The church is a big ear and a big heart,” he shared, highlighting his approach to listening and understanding diverse voices within the church community.
Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore praised the appointment, stating, “Pope Francis could not have chosen a better bishop for the Diocese of Providence.” Bishop Lewandowski thanked Archbishop Lori for his support, calling his experience in Baltimore a blessing.
Msgr. Albert A. Kenney expressed enthusiasm for the new appointment, welcoming Bishop Lewandowski with a nod to Easter joy, and recognized the diocese's continued mission guided by the motto “Hope.”
Bishop Lewandowski, originally from Toledo, Ohio, was ordained in 1994 and has held various pastoral roles across the United States and the West Indies. He will be installed at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul on May 20.
Following the announcement, Bishop Lewandowski participated in Mass and toured diocesan outreach ministries and schools, kicking off his new role with engagement and optimism.
