Following the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump to pause military aid to Ukraine, European Union bishops have urged unity in supporting the country amidst ongoing conflict. The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union released a statement on March 4 emphasizing the importance of EU member states maintaining their commitment to aiding Ukraine.
The statement highlighted that Ukraine's struggle for peace and territorial integrity is crucial not only for its future but also for the entire European continent and a free democratic world. This call comes after heightened tensions between the United States and Ukraine following a clash at the White House between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on February 28.
European leaders have shown support for Zelenskyy, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer outlining a peace plan during a meeting in London attended by French President Emmanuel Macron. COMECE expressed gratitude to EU leaders for supporting Ukraine amid Russia’s violation of international law, stressing that forceful alteration of national borders and acts against civilians demand justice.
Without directly naming Trump, COMECE condemned attempts to distort reality regarding aggression against Ukraine and insisted any dialogue must involve those affected by it. They emphasized that any future peace accord should respect international law, provide security guarantees, allow Ukrainian families to reunite, and enable them to live freely in their homeland.
The bishops also called on Russia and other international entities to assist in reconstructing Ukraine and advocated for advancing its EU accession alongside other candidates. They expressed hope that the EU would remain committed as a stabilizing force globally during these uncertain times.
