The 97th annual Academy Awards, held on March 2, 2025, saw the film "Anora" awarded Best Picture. The movie, directed and written by Sean Baker, has sparked controversy due to its graphic content. Baker received three additional Oscars for his work on the film, while Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her portrayal of the title character.

In one of his acceptance speeches, Baker expressed gratitude to "the sex worker community," offering them his "deepest respect." The film's portrayal of a stripper and prostitute has raised questions about the depiction of such themes in cinema. Additionally, the script is noted for its extensive use of vulgar language.

There is ongoing debate about how far filmmakers can push boundaries while still receiving an R rating from the Motion Picture Association. An NC-17 classification remains a significant barrier to box office success.

Despite these discussions, Oscar night included moments of elegance and entertainment. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande opened with a duet from "Wicked," setting a refined tone for the evening. Host Conan O’Brien maintained high spirits with light-hearted humor.

"The Brutalist," an immigration-themed drama by Brady Corbet, was another notable winner. The film earned awards for Actor in a Leading Role (Adrien Brody), Cinematography, and Original Score.

Mick Jagger presented the Oscar for Best Original Song during the ceremony. Meanwhile, Bob Dylan fans were disappointed by his absence despite nominations for “A Complete Unknown.”

The event also honored those affected by recent fires in Hollywood and recognized first responders' efforts during these disasters.

The ceremony concluded abruptly for Hulu viewers as streaming ended before all awards were announced due to time constraints.
