Catholic bishops from both sides of the Texas-Mexico border have voiced their commitment to the common good amidst the ongoing U.S. immigration crisis, while urging reforms in the country's immigration system. During a press conference on February 28, which concluded a biannual meeting held from February 26-28 at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, they released a statement highlighting their coordinated efforts.
The gathering focused on "the situation of migrants and refugees," an issue that has gained new significance with changes in federal administrations in both countries. Bishop Eugenio Andrés Lira Rugarcía of Matamoros-Reynosa, Mexico, and Bishop Mark J. Seitz of El Paso, Texas, presidents for their respective episcopal conferences’ migration committees, delivered a joint lecture addressing "a pastoral response to the current migration crisis from the border."
The bishops emphasized that "the Catholic Church has always been a reliable partner" in supporting those in need through processes aimed at welcoming and integrating vulnerable populations. Their statement arrives as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is engaged in legal action against the Trump administration for terminating its refugee resettlement contract under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
Further complicating matters, federal funds intended for organizations like Catholic Charities have been targeted as part of broader immigration policy enforcement efforts by the previous administration. A temporary block was placed on this funding freeze by a judge on January 28.
The bishops' statement underscored collective responsibility for promoting common good while safeguarding human dignity: “We are all together responsible... finding the right balance between various human rights.” They reiterated concerns over what they described as a "broken immigration system" in need of reform.
To migrants and refugees, they affirmed ongoing support from Church agencies committed to announcing Gospel values and serving with compassion.
Drawing inspiration from Pope Francis and citing his encouragement based on the parable of the Good Samaritan, Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller stated during the press conference that Pope Francis had urged continued support for migrants and refugees while recognizing their human dignity.
Archbishop García-Siller highlighted Pope Francis's call for comprehensive immigration reform—a sentiment echoed by Texas-Mexico bishops over four decades. Bishop Daniel E. Flores also stressed community support's importance during challenging times faced by immigrant communities.
