The Vatican has issued a document emphasizing the importance of maintaining the teacher-student relationship amidst the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational settings. The guidance, approved by Pope Francis and released on January 28, stresses that AI should not undermine this essential connection.
"The physical presence of a teacher creates a relational dynamic that AI cannot replicate," states the document titled "Antiqua et Nova (ancient and new): Note on the Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence." This document was prepared by the dicasteries for the Doctrine of the Faith and for Culture and Education.
While acknowledging AI's potential benefits, such as enhancing access to education and providing tailored support, the Vatican warns against excessive reliance on technology. It notes that "extensive use of AI in education could lead to students' increased reliance on technology, eroding their ability to perform some skills independently."
The document also highlights concerns about AI systems providing answers without encouraging students to think critically or solve problems themselves. Education should focus on developing independent thinking rather than merely accumulating information.
Citing Pope Francis’ message for World Day of Peace 2024, it emphasizes teaching young people to discern data produced by AI. Schools are challenged to help students understand the social and ethical implications of technology development.
Additionally, it acknowledges risks associated with biased or fabricated information from AI programs, which can mislead students. Transparency in using AI is recommended as a guideline.
Catholic universities are encouraged to act as "great laboratories of hope" during rapid technological changes. They are urged to develop ethically sound applications for AI that promote societal cohesion and dialogue between faith and reason.
