Archbishop Gregory J. Hartmayer of Atlanta has urged Catholics to respond with prayers and penance to a "black mass" event organized by the satanic temple of Atlanta, scheduled for October 25. In an October 8 memo addressed to clergy, religious sisters, and staff of the archdiocese, Archbishop Hartmayer described the event as a "serious sacrilege."
He stated that the ritual is "a blasphemous and obscene inversion of the Catholic Mass," noting that participants claim to use a consecrated host obtained illicitly from a Catholic church. The archbishop emphasized that this act represents "a deliberate attack on the Catholic Mass as well as the foundational beliefs of all Christians."
Archbishop Hartmayer called on Catholics in the Archdiocese of Atlanta to engage in prayer and penance. He requested each parish to hold a Eucharistic Holy Hour with Benediction ideally on Friday, October 25, at 9 p.m., or before then as an act of reparation.
The archdiocese's website provides suggested prayers in English and Spanish for this purpose, including “An Act of Reparation to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament” and a “Litany of Reparation in Honor of the Blessed Sacrament.”
