The Archdiocese of San Antonio has urged prayers for those affected by severe flooding in the region. The floods have resulted in the disappearance of at least 20 girls from Camp Mystic, a Christian camp located along the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas. The camp was evacuated after receiving heavy rainfall that caused the river to rise dramatically.
Sheriff Larry L. Leitha confirmed that 24 people have died due to the flooding in Kerr County, and more fatalities are anticipated. Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a disaster for several counties to provide them with necessary resources and support.
The archdiocese expressed hope for strength and rebuilding among those impacted by the floods, pledging support during these challenging times. A special Mass is scheduled on July 6 at Notre Dame Church in Kerrville to honor those who lost their lives or remain missing.
Other dioceses also called for prayers and announced Masses for flood victims, including Beaumont and Austin. Father James A. Misko from Austin Diocese prayed for first responders engaged in search efforts.
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick assured parents that all possible measures are being taken to locate the missing girls from Camp Mystic, which hosts girls aged 7-17.
Rescue operations involve helicopters, drones, rescue teams, and swimmers with hundreds of personnel on site. The archdiocese noted that San Antonio Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller is present in Kerrville offering assistance alongside Catholic Charities Mobile Relief Unit providing essential supplies.
