Texas is grappling with a devastating flood that has claimed nearly 90 lives, including 28 children in Kerr County, and left more than 40 people missing. Governor Gregg Abbott declared July 6 a day of prayer, urging Texans to seek comfort and strength through faith.
The search continues for at least ten girls and a camp counselor from Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas. The camp's director, Richard "Dick" Eastland, died while attempting to save campers.
Governor Abbott stated, "Texans are known for their faith, strength, and resilience," emphasizing the community's efforts during this crisis.
Pope Leo XIV offered condolences during his Sunday Angelus talk: “I would like to express sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones.” He also prayed for those affected by the flooding of the Guadalupe River.
The Archdiocese of San Antonio called for prayers through St. Anthony of Padua’s intercession. In a social media post, they asked for support for families impacted by the floods. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston also extended prayers in English and Spanish.
Tragically, two sisters from St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Dallas were among the deceased. Blair and Brooke Harber were found with their hands clasped together after being swept away by floodwaters while camping along the Guadalupe River.
Father Joshua J. Whitfield of St. Rita’s urged prayers for the Harber family during this difficult time: “Please keep the Harber family in your prayers.”
Notre Dame Catholic Church in Kerrville has become a center of aid for flood victims under Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller's guidance. The church received an overwhelming amount of material donations but continues to accept financial contributions.
A nightly rosary is being held at Notre Dame Catholic Church from July 7-11 at 6:30 p.m., open to everyone regardless of religious affiliation.
Catholic Charities USA has established a page to assist local agencies helping those affected by the disaster.
