In the early hours of July 4, 2025, a sudden and devastating flash flood struck Texas Hill Country. The Guadalupe River rose by 26 feet in just 45 minutes due to heavy rain, leading to significant loss of life and property. By Sunday evening, officials confirmed 82 fatalities with dozens still missing.
The flood brought out acts of heroism amid the chaos. A father lost his life while saving his family, and Dick Eastland, owner of Camp Mystic, died attempting to rescue young girls from rising waters. Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan played a crucial role in saving 165 individuals swept away by the floods.
Tragically, among the deceased are at least 28 children, many who were asleep in their camp cabins when the floodwaters hit. Blair and Brooke Harber from Dallas were found dead after being washed away from their grandparents' cabin. Their hands were reportedly "locked together" when discovered.
Grandparents Mike and Charlene Harber remain unaccounted for. "Prayers are needed so we can bring them home," said their daughter Jennifer Harber.
Pope Leo XIV extended condolences during his Angelus audience on July 6: “I would like to express sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones.” He urged prayers for those affected by the disaster.
Local reunification centers continue efforts to locate missing persons, including a Catholic church in Kerrville hosting families waiting for news about their loved ones. Social media is filled with appeals for help and requests for each missing person to be remembered individually.
First responders worked tirelessly as vehicles were retrieved from flooded areas around Kerrville on July 6. Among those reported missing were several individuals associated with Camp Mystic.
Support efforts are ongoing, with Catholic Charities USA accepting donations nationwide. Locally, Notre Dame Church in Kerrville has also been receiving contributions. The Archdiocese of San Antonio is actively involved under Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller's leadership.
Reflecting on this tragedy highlights life's unpredictability and encourages living according to spiritual values daily. Many victims displayed courage through faith during these trying times; it serves as a reminder of how love can prevail even amidst such sorrowful circumstances.
