Pope Leo XIV addressed members of the Vatican Secretariat of State on June 5, emphasizing the universal role of the Catholic Church in fostering unity and relationships worldwide. During his audience at the Vatican, he underscored that the church should be a "community of faith and charity," free from ambition or rivalry. Quoting St. Paul VI, Pope Leo reminded them to act as "brothers and sisters, and children of the pope."
The pope highlighted the Secretariat's diverse composition, which includes bishops, priests, religious figures, and laypeople from around the globe working alongside him. "Together we share the questions, difficulties, challenges and hopes of the people of God throughout the world," he stated.
He further explained that the church must follow a path where "the joy of the Gospel may reach everyone" through contemporary cultures and languages while maintaining a universal outlook to appreciate different cultures. This universality reflects a multifaceted unity requiring synthesis to aid in fulfilling papal missions.
Pope Leo praised the Secretariat for its essential role in unification and synthesis. He expressed gratitude for their work, often unnoticed but inspired by an evangelical spirit. He acknowledged their demanding tasks and conveyed his support and appreciation for their efforts.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin introduced Pope Leo to the dicastery's officials, noting their commitment to serving Jesus Christ's church. The Secretariat comprises 246 members across various sections dedicated to general affairs, diplomatic relations with states, foreign affairs, and supporting diplomatic staff.
In closing remarks, Pope Leo thanked Cardinal Parolin and all officials for their service. He emphasized that he relies on their assistance in his ministry: "It is evident to me that the pope cannot work alone." Expressing hope that they pray for him daily, he appreciated their ongoing support since his inauguration on May 18.
