Catholic bishops in Kenya are calling for a thorough investigation into the deaths of two priests, Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett and Father John Maina Ndegwa, which have raised concerns about security and intent. The bishops described the incidents as "deeply disturbing" and expressed condolences to the bishops of Eldoret and Nyahururu.
Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba of Kisumu, president of the Kenyan bishops’ conference, stated on May 28 that these events contribute to a sense of insecurity and helplessness among religious servants. He lamented that life in Kenya is being undervalued, with murders used for political purposes.
The Catholic community in Kenya is shocked by these deaths and demands government action. Father Bett was killed on May 22 while returning from leading prayers in Kerio Valley. Auxiliary Bishop John Kiplimo Lelei of Eldoret noted that the priest was involved in community outreach when he was shot. The motive remains unclear, though there are suspicions that he was targeted.
Father Maina passed away on May 15 at St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital after being found injured by a roadside near Nairobi–Nakuru highway. Bishop Joseph Ndembu Mbatia of Nyahururu urged patience as investigations continue. Reports suggest Father Maina may have been poisoned, as he reportedly mentioned this to medics before his death.
Authorities are exploring potential links between threats received by Father Maina following a church event involving a controversial political figure.
