Pope Leo XIV visited the Borgo Laudato Si’ ecology project at the papal villa and farm in Castel Gandolfo on May 29. This site was previously a summer residence for popes. The Vatican City governor's office stated that Pope Francis established this project in early 2023 to "make a tangible contribution to the development of ecological education by opening a new space for training and raising awareness."

The project not only offers tours of formal gardens but also trains gardeners and maintenance workers. Additionally, Pope Francis converted the papal palace into a museum in 2016. While some locals hope that Pope Leo will spend part of the summer there, no plans have been announced.

Visitors gathered outside the papal palace during the pope's visit, hoping to see him. Despite their enthusiasm, they left without seeing him. The Vatican press office confirmed his presence but did not provide further details.

The property at Castel Gandolfo spans over 135 acres with gardens, farmland, residences, and a farm. It includes various agricultural areas such as orchards and vineyards. In September, Pope Francis highlighted efforts to develop a vineyard as part of blending tradition with innovation at Borgo.

Father Manuel Dorantes from the Archdiocese of Chicago was appointed as administrative management director for the Laudato Si’ Center for Higher Education within this project last November. Father Dorantes did not comment on Pope Leo's visit.
