Celebrating his first Mass at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that communion is built "on our knees," through prayer and a commitment to conversion. He echoed Pope Francis' dedication to listening, particularly to the Holy Spirit, which then leads to understanding others as "our brothers and sisters."

During his homily, Pope Leo highlighted the importance of listening in achieving communion. He referenced a reading from the Acts of the Apostles where Paul and Barnabas recognized the authority of the Jerusalem church. This dialogue led to a decision because they listened to God's voice.

"In this way, they remind us that communion is built primarily 'on our knees,' through prayer and constant commitment to conversion," he said. "For only in this way can each of us hear within the voice of the Spirit crying out: 'Abba! Father!'"

Pope Leo encouraged allowing oneself to be transformed by the Gospel, stating it makes one more capable of proclaiming its message. He assured that "the Gospel assures us that we are not alone in making our decisions in life."

He expressed hope for qualities like tenderness and self-sacrifice being present among all members of the church, including himself. The pope also committed to contributing to ongoing processes by listening as much as possible.

"I would like to express my firm desire to contribute to this great ongoing process by listening to everyone as much as possible," he said.

Pope Leo asked for support "in prayer and charity" and shared his love for Rome's faithful. After Mass, he addressed a crowd from the basilica's balcony with wishes for peace.

The pope also spoke about living witnesses of Christ’s hope during a Holy Year dedicated to hope amid global suffering due to war and poverty.

"Thank you for walking together," he said. "Let us all walk together."

Afterward, Pope Leo visited St. Mary Major Basilica and prayed at Pope Francis' tomb before meeting with Rome's mayor Roberto Gualtieri. During their meeting, he expressed his responsibility towards serving all members of Rome's Diocese.

"We are partners, each in its own institutional setting," he said. As he took possession of Rome's cathedral, he declared himself Roman amidst applause.

Later on May 25th, Pope Leo led prayers in St Peter’s Square urging compassion towards those suffering or poor.
