Meeting with Vatican employees, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the crucial role they play in his ministry. "Popes pass away, but the Curia remains," he remarked on May 24, highlighting the institution's role in preserving and transmitting the church's historic memory.
Addressing officials and employees of the Roman Curia, Vatican City State, and the Vicariate of Rome, Pope Leo stressed that memory is essential for a living organism. "It nourishes the present and guides the future," he said.
Pope Leo was warmly received at the Vatican audience hall with extended applause. He humorously noted that if it continued longer than his prepared remarks, he would have to extend his speech. The event included time for personal interactions as Pope Leo shook hands and blessed attendees.
According to ANSA, an Italian news agency, Pope Leo approved a traditional employee bonus following his election on May 8. Each employee received 500 euros (about $570).
Since his election, Pope Leo has been meeting with Vatican office heads. He temporarily reappointed top officials to allow time for reflection before making final appointments.
Reflecting on his journey from Peru to Rome after being appointed prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops by Pope Francis two years ago, Pope Leo shared: "What a change!" He expressed gratitude for his missionary experience in Peru as an Augustinian religious.
Reaffirming Pope Francis' reorganization of the Roman Curia towards missionary work, he said: "Together, we must look for ways to be a missionary church." Quoting from his first public speech post-election, he urged support for communion and unity in charity and truth.
