In Grinnell, Kansas, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church suffered damage when a tornado hit the small town on May 18. "The roof was ripped off, yet the candles burned on," stated a Facebook post by the Diocese of Salina. The post also urged prayers for those affected by the disaster.
According to AccuWeather meteorologists, preliminary estimates suggest that damage and economic costs from the storm could reach between $9 billion and $11 billion. Missouri reported extensive damage as well, particularly in St. Louis where two tornadoes damaged over 5,000 homes and buildings.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear visited Laurel County to witness the aftermath firsthand. He expressed gratitude for first responders' efforts and pledged support for recovery efforts. "I promise that we will be there for our people until every home and every life is rebuilt," he said.
Bishop John E. Stowe of Lexington offered prayers from Vatican City during Pope Leo XIV's inauguration Mass. "I greet you from Vatican City where I bring your prayers and congratulations to our first pope from the US!" he said. Bishop Stowe emphasized solidarity with those affected by both recent tornadoes and earlier flooding incidents.
Catholic Charities of Lexington has been actively involved in disaster relief since February floods impacted several counties under FEMA declarations. Executive Director Shelli Gregory highlighted ongoing recovery efforts and collaboration with local parishes to support affected communities.
In Missouri, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis is responding to numerous requests for assistance following the tornadoes. Jared Bryson, president and CEO of Catholic Charities in St. Louis, noted an overwhelming need for services such as temporary housing and food.
Efforts are underway across multiple states to provide essential support to those impacted by this natural disaster as communities work towards rebuilding lives and homes.
