President Donald Trump signed the Take It Down Act into law on May 19, aiming to combat online sexual exploitation. The legislation imposes penalties for the nonconsensual publication of sexually explicit images and videos, including those generated by artificial intelligence known as "deepfakes." It also criminalizes threats to publish such material.

First Lady Melania Trump was a notable advocate for the bill, along with organizations focused on ending sexual exploitation and human trafficking. She actively lobbied for its passage in Congress and was present at the signing event where President Trump invited her to add her signature. She described the act as a "national victory" and highlighted concerns about technology's impact on children.

The bipartisan effort was led by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar in the Senate, with Representatives Maria Elvira Salazar and Madeleine Dean introducing a companion bill in the House. Cruz emphasized that those who misuse technology for exploitation will face legal consequences, while Klobuchar noted that the legislation provides victims with legal protections.

Supporters of the law include the Alliance to End Human Trafficking and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. Marcel van der Watt, president of the latter organization, stated that this marks a historic moment for survivors of image-based abuse.

The U.S. bishops have also addressed related issues in an updated pastoral letter on pornography, underscoring its moral implications.
