Ten years ago, a seemingly simple gesture from Pope Francis left a profound impact on a Philadelphia family. As part of his visit to the 2015 World Meeting of Families, the Pope took a moment to kiss a baby girl named Gianna Masciantonio, profoundly affecting her family.

"Pope Francis’ compassion and humility has left a mark on the world — and especially in our hearts," said Kristen Masciantonio, Gianna’s mother. "We have always and will always keep him in our hearts and prayers."

Gianna was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor shortly after her birth in 2014. Despite dire predictions, she survived on the strength of her family's Catholic faith. A turning point emerged on her first Christmas Eve, when doctors updated the family on the tumor's non-cancerous nature, eventually diagnosing it as systemic juvenile xanthogranuloma.

Over the following months, Gianna underwent extensive chemotherapy and surgeries. Her family sought strength in faith, standing among papal pilgrims hoping for respite in the Pope's presence during his visit.

In an unexpected moment, a papal security agent lifted Gianna to Pope Francis, who blessed her. This moment, dubbed "The Miracle on Market Street," captivated global audiences. As Gianna continued treatment, the tumor began to shrink.

For the Masciantonios, this encounter symbolized spiritual assurance, describing Pope Francis as a "sanctified messenger" who reinforced their belief that "God has been at our side through this entire journey."

During this visit, the family also met Dr. Gianna Emanuela Molla at a shrine honoring St. Gianna, the patron of the 2015 event.

Now ten years later, Gianna is thriving, regularly visiting Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and enjoying everyday activities. Her family founded the For the Love of Grace Foundation to support families facing childhood cancer and rare diseases.

In reflecting on Pope Francis' death on April 21, Kristen Masciantonio expressed gratitude for his influence: "We will be forever grateful for his blessing and for the countless prayers and support that have surrounded Gianna’s journey."
