The Vatican has issued a call for global action against human trafficking, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to address this complex issue. Pope Francis highlighted the importance of international collaboration in a message released on February 7, ahead of the International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking.
The pope appealed to "representatives of governments and organizations" to join in promoting initiatives aimed at defending human dignity and eliminating all forms of human trafficking. He underscored that trafficking is exacerbated by wars, conflicts, famine, and climate change, necessitating comprehensive global responses.
Pope Francis invoked St. Josephine Bakhita's intercession as he called for conditions that would ban trafficking and exploitation while fostering respect for fundamental human rights. The Holy Year theme of hope was also mentioned, acknowledging the challenge many face in maintaining hope amidst modern slavery affecting millions worldwide.
He questioned where new impetus could be found to combat various forms of exploitation such as organ trade, sexual exploitation, forced labor, drug and arms trafficking. Emphasizing divine assistance, he encouraged not growing accustomed to injustice or believing certain issues cannot be eradicated.
In his message, Pope Francis acknowledged the work done by young people globally through Talitha Kum's "youth ambassadors project," which fights against human trafficking. He met with youth ambassadors and members of Talitha Kum during an audience held at Domus Sanctae Marthae due to his bronchitis condition.
The pope commended their pilgrimage efforts in Rome aimed at raising awareness against human trafficking. He warned about traffickers finding new ways into societies and stressed not tolerating the shameful exploitation that violates fundamental rights.
"We must unite our forces," he said, urging collective responsibility in combating crimes profiting from society's most vulnerable members.
