Police in Madison, Wisconsin, are investigating a mass shooting at Abundant Life Christian School that occurred on December 16, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed at a press conference that there is no ongoing threat to the school or the local community. The suspected shooter, believed to be a student at the school, is deceased.
Chief Barnes stated that the Madison Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, which serves students from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Details about casualties and injuries are still being gathered.
“This is something that we all prepare for, but we hope we never have to do,” said Barnes regarding the law enforcement response.
A White House spokesperson indicated that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation and senior officials are coordinating with local authorities in Madison “to provide support as needed.”
Governor Tony Evers expressed his concern in a statement: “I am closely monitoring the incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison.” He added, “We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond.”
The tragedy occurred near the anniversary of another significant event—the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012—which resulted in 26 deaths. This remains one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.
