Kenton County leads Christmas light recycling efforts again

Brad Foley Assistant FIRE/EMS Chief | City of Erlanger

The annual Christmas Light Collection Event has returned, featuring a friendly competition among Kenton County, Boone County, and Campbell County. This event aims to encourage the recycling of holiday lights to reduce landfill waste.

Over the past three years, Kenton County has consistently led in collecting the most lights. In 2021, they collected 1,299 pounds of lights; in 2022, this increased to 2,326 pounds; and in 2023, they reached a total of 3,264 pounds. Collectively in 2023, the counties diverted a total of 4,477 pounds of lights from landfills.

This year’s collection period runs from December 1, 2024 through January 31, 2025. Participants can drop off both traditional and LED style bulbs at the City of Erlanger during business hours. Organizers are hopeful that with continued community support, Kenton County can maintain its winning streak for another year.
