Ahead of World Mission Sunday on October 20, Hallow, a prayer app, and the Pontifical Mission Societies USA have launched a global novena dedicated to St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the patroness of missions. The initiative encourages participation in nine days of prayer beginning October 11.
"Invites the faithful to join in nine days of prayer, reflecting on the mission and spirit of St. Thérèse," said the Pontifical Mission Societies USA in an October 9 statement. "St. Thérèse, who is the patroness of the missions despite never having left France, remains a model of love and dedication to the Church’s global mission."
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle will guide English reflections during the novena. Father Anthony Andreassi emphasized Pope Francis's call for prayers for mission territories and highlighted that this novena allows Catholics worldwide to unite in support.
The novena ends on October 19 and is available in several languages. Sister Regina Da Costa Pedro leads Portuguese reflections, while Father José María Calderón offers Spanish ones.
"This novena honors St. Thérèse’s life and her profound dedication to spreading the Gospel through small acts of love and faith," stated the Pontifical Mission Societies USA. Known for her "little way," St. Thérèse continues to inspire global missionary efforts.
The Hallow app offers free access to guided prayers and daily reflections during this period. New users receive three months of premium service upon registration.
"We’re deeply grateful to Hallow for partnering with us," said Father Andreassi, noting their role in expanding this initiative globally.
Participants can also follow along via social media channels such as Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn.
The societies operate under four main branches supporting various missionary activities worldwide since being designated pontifical by Pope Pius XI in 1922: The Society for Propagation of Faith supports local evangelization; The Missionary Childhood Association educates children about missionary outreach; The Society of St. Peter trains future clergy; The Missionary Union focuses on forming clergy as evangelizers.
"This novena is part of an international effort by the Pontifical Mission Societies," said Father Andreassi.
"World Mission Sunday reminds us that many still don’t know that Christ came for all," he added, emphasizing its importance in supporting missionaries across diverse regions including Asia, Africa, Oceania, Latin America, and the Middle East through collections started in 1926 aimed at assisting young or persecuted communities.
